Chefchaouen, the famous Blue City, is one of the most photographed places in Morocco — but it has no airport and no train station.
Almost every traveler reaches it from Tangier, about 115 km to the north. The journey takes between 2 and 2.5 hours depending on how you travel.
You have three real options: the CTM bus, a grand taxi, or a rental car. Here is the honest comparison, with real prices, so you can pick the right one for your trip.
Quick Answer
- Cheapest: CTM bus — comfortable, air-conditioned, around 50–70 MAD (~5–7 €) per person. Book online in advance.
- Fastest door-to-door for groups: private grand taxi — around 600–800 MAD (~60–80 €) for the whole car.
- Most freedom: rental car — lets you stop in Tetouan or at viewpoints, and continue to Akchour easily.
Option 1: CTM Bus (Best Value)
CTM is Morocco’s most reliable bus company: fixed prices, assigned seats, air conditioning and luggage handling.
Practical Details
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Journey time | ~2.5 to 3 hours |
| Price | ~50–70 MAD per person (verify current fare when booking) |
| Luggage | ~5–10 MAD per bag, paid at the counter |
| Departure | CTM station, Tangier (not the main Gare Routière) |
| Arrival | CTM station Chefchaouen, ~15–20 min walk or short taxi from the medina |
| Booking | ctm.ma website, CTM app, or at the station |
There are only a few departures per day and seats sell out, especially on weekends and in spring/summer. Book on the CTM website or app a day or two ahead and arrive 30 minutes before departure to check in your luggage.
The Catch
The CTM station in Chefchaouen sits below the town. It is an uphill walk to the medina — with luggage, take a petit taxi (should cost around 10–20 MAD; agree on the price or ask for the meter before getting in).
There is also Supratours and local bus companies from the main Gare Routière. They can be cheaper, but comfort and punctuality vary — for most travelers CTM is worth the small difference.
Option 2: Grand Taxi (Best for Groups)
Grand taxis are shared long-distance taxis, usually older Mercedes or newer vans, that run fixed routes between cities.
Two Ways to Use Them
Shared (the local way): you pay for one seat and wait until the taxi fills up (6 passengers). Cheapest, but cramped and you leave only when full.
Private (“course”): you pay for all seats and leave immediately. This is what most travelers choose.
Real Prices
| Formula | Price |
|---|---|
| Shared, per seat | ~100–120 MAD |
| Private, whole taxi | ~600–800 MAD depending on negotiation |
For 3–4 people, a private grand taxi costs about the same per person as the bus but takes you door to door, on your schedule, in about 2 hours.
Negotiate and confirm three things before getting in: the total price, that it includes luggage, and the drop-off point (ask for Bab El Ain or Place Outa El Hammam side of the medina). Have the amount ready in cash. If a driver quotes a price far above 800 MAD, politely walk to the next taxi — there are always others.
Option 3: Rental Car (Best for Road Trips)
If Chefchaouen is part of a bigger Northern Morocco itinerary, driving is the option that unlocks everything: the coastal road, Tetouan’s medina, mountain viewpoints and the Akchour waterfalls (45 minutes beyond Chefchaouen, painful to reach without a car).
The Route
- Fastest: Tangier → A4/A6 motorway toward Tetouan → N2 to Chefchaouen. Around 2 hours. Small motorway toll.
- Scenic: the old mountain roads via Tetouan offer beautiful views but demand slower, careful driving.
What It Costs
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Economy car rental | ~250–400 MAD/day (~25–40 €) via comparison sites |
| Fuel for the round trip | ~150–200 MAD |
| Motorway toll | ~20–30 MAD each way |
| Parking in Chefchaouen | ~20–30 MAD/day at guarded lots near the medina |
The blue medina is entirely pedestrian and the surrounding streets are steep and narrow. Use one of the guarded parking lots near Bab El Ain or your riad’s recommended spot, pay the gardien, and explore on foot. Do not attempt to drive close to the medina “just to drop bags” — you will regret it.

FAQ
How long is the trip from Tangier to Chefchaouen?
Around 2 hours by car or private taxi, 2.5 to 3 hours by CTM bus.
Is there a train to Chefchaouen?
No. The nearest train stations are in Tangier. Bus, taxi or car are the only options.
Can I do Chefchaouen as a day trip from Tangier?
Yes, but it is a long day (4–5 hours of transport). One night in the blue city is far more rewarding — the medina is at its best in the early morning before the day-trip crowds arrive.
Should I go via Tetouan?
If you drive, Tetouan’s UNESCO-listed medina makes an excellent 2-hour stop roughly halfway.

Final Thoughts
For solo travelers and couples, the CTM bus is the smart default: cheap, safe and comfortable. Groups of three or four should split a private grand taxi. And if the Blue City is only one stop on a longer northern adventure, rent a car — the freedom to stop in Tetouan and push on to Akchour is what turns a transfer into a road trip.
